drive to Swaziland – Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary Camp
We left Pongola, South Africa this morning and crossed the
border into the Kingdom of Swaziland. It cost a tax of 50 Rand ($5.00 American)
to enter the country and it took over an hour to deal with the paperwork etc.(very
disorganized) We had to watch carefully the speed limit which changed very
frequently and there were many, many speed bumps and rumble strips. The villages again had many animals in the
streets and everyone smiled and waved to us.
The other thing we noticed on the highways were frequent pedestrian
overpasses in the cities.
Our campground in Swaziland was very interesting. It was in the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary. The
dirt road was the worst to imagine. It
had been destroyed by rain and had big pot holes and deep ridges. There were
many children walking home from school in the road. Once we got to the
campground it was a real treat. It was strange to be walking around with wild
animals joining us. We even ate at the
restaurant followed by local entertainment but we had to walk home in the
darkness. Our flashlight beams seemed
very small. It was strange to see
warthogs on bended knees as they ate. We
went to a candle factory for lunch and there were local craftsmen there selling
their wares. I made some great purchases.
